As of 1992, 14 billion pounds of trash is dumped into oceans annually around the world. This waste represents a huge economic burden on all the countries and on the environment itself. There is every reason to think of alternatives to simply “throwing things away”. Designers and artists have been thinking of ways in which to reduce garbage and re-purpose some of what we throw away while making beautiful and useful objects. We can always re-use more of what we throw away to make something useful.

• Plastic containers and wood mulch have been recycled to form a kind of plastic wood used to create residential structures.
• Aluminum cans, car bumpers, carpeting, cereal boxes, comic books, egg cartons, glass containers, laundry detergent bottles, motor oil, nails, newspapers, paper towels, steel products and trash bags are some of the products available today that are made from recycled MSW.
• Fashion Designer Anita Ahuja takes waste plastic bags from the garbage dumps of New Delhi and has turned them into a successful line of fashion accessories like purses, bags and accessories.
• Finnish commercial environmental designer Aleksi Hautamäki recycles commercially used signs to be used as individual letters.
• An exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Craft included 40 works that pushed the boundaries between art, design, and craft, with an emphasis on sustainability.
• A dress, Bonded, by Cat Chow was made entirely of one continuous zipper, while Livia Marin’s sculpture Ficciones de un Uso contained 2,200 tubes of lipstick.

So take a look at what people in your community are throwing away and consider innovative ways in which these items could become useful products. Take everyday discarded or recycled materials and re-design them into functional products. Once we tell ourselves absolutely nothing can or should be wasted it is amazing what kind of ideas we will come up with.

Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar will award the following cash prizes and two full scholarships to the winners of the 2010 VCUQatar Design Competition for the best design or drawing representing this year’s theme.

• 2 overall winners will be offered full 4-year Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarships for Creativity to study Fashion, Interior, Graphic Design or Painting & Printmaking at VCUQatar in our Doha campus.
• 8 First Prizes of $700 each
• 10 Second Prizes of $500 each
• 22 Third Prizes of $300 each.

1. Competition is open to students in their final year (12th grade high school equivalent) of secondary school. Students must graduate in approximately May/June 2010 and be ready to enter university in August of 2010.
2. Students can create the work using any media and any medium. However all submissions must be electronic. Students must either scan in their 2D work or take a digital photograph of their 3D work. The submission must be a JPEG format file no larger than 800 x 1280 pixels at 72dpi with a total file size less than 2MB. All files should be uploaded to the website. Files that can NOT be viewed as a JPEG will NOT be accepted. Title of the project and the words '2010 Design Competition Entry' must be entered in the text description box. The file should be named 'StudentName.jpg' where the words 'StudentName' are replaced with the entrant's first and last name. Please provide an approximately 100 word description of what your design shows.
3. One entry submission per student.
4. VCUQatar is NOT responsible for any errors or inability to upload or receive files due to internet and/or power failures. VCUQatar will NOT reimburse entrants for any costs incurred to enter the competition. VCUQatar reserves the right to use the entries in promotional materials.
5. DEADLINE: January 31, 2010. All files must be uploaded on or before January 31, 2010.
6. To be eligible for one of the two full four-year Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned Scholarships for Creativity to attend Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, competition winners must submit completed VCUQatar application including English competency test results (TOEFL/IELTS) and portfolio by March 1, 2010.
7. If the student does NOT have access to an internet connection to upload the files they must complete the attached form and submit it to the address below at their own expense. Project submissions should not be larger than 31cm X 45cm x 8cm in size. Any submissions will NOT be returned.

2. يستطيع الطلاب أن يقوموا بابتكار عمل باستخدام أي من الوسائل وبأي طريقة. ويجب أن يتم تقديم الأعمال إلكترونياً في صورة ثنائية أو ثلاثية الأبعاد ونسخها أو تصويرها على ملف JPEG على أن لا تتعدى حجم الصورة 1280 x 800 بيكسل على dpi 72 وعلى أن لا يتجاوز حجم الملف الإجمالي 2 ميغا بايت. يجب على الطالب تحميل الملف إلكترونياً من خلال الموقع الإلكتروني للجامعة. ولن يتم قبول الملفات التي يتم تقديمها بلغة إلكترونية غير JPEG . يجب أن يقوم الطالب بكتابة عنوان المسابقة " مسابقة التصميم السنوية لعام 2010 " في مربع وصف النص على أن يحمل الملف اسم الطالب بحيث يتم استبدال كلمة "اسم الطالب" بالاسم الأول والأخير للطالب. كما يجب على الطالب أن يقوم بتقديم وصف للتصميم الخاص به بما لا يتجاوز 100 كلمة.
3. لا يسمح للطالب بتقديم أكثر من مشاركة واحدة.
4. لن تكون جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر مسؤولة عن أي خطأ في استلام الملفات أو عدم القدرة على فتح ملف المشترك بسبب انقطاع في الإنترنت أو في الكهرباء ، كما لن تقوم الجامعة بتحمل أو تغطية أي تكاليف يتكبدها المشترك للاشتراك في المسابقة. ويحق للجامعة استخدام أي من التصاميم في موادها التسويقية والترويجية.
5. سيكون آخر موعد للاشتراك في المسابقة هو 31 يناير 2010 . وعلى جميع المتسابقين إرسال ملفاتهم واشتراكاتهم قبل هذا التاريخ.
6. لتكون أحد المؤهلين للفوز بمنحة سمو الشيخة موزة بنت ناصر المسند للإبداع وللحصول على منحة دراسية كاملة للدراسة في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر ولمدة 4 سنوات، على الفائزين في المسابقة تقديم طلب الالتحاق بالجامعة كاملاً بما في ذلك نتائج اختبارات الكفاءة في اللغة الإنجليزية )توفل / أي إي إل تي سي( وتقديم ملف الطالب الشخصي في موعد أقصاه الأول من مارس 2010 .
7. إذا لم يستطع الطالب إرسال ملفه إلكترونياً لا بد أن يقوم الطالب بتعبئة النموذج المرفق وإرساله على نفقته الخاصة للعنوان أدناه. وعلى أن لا يتجاوز حجم المشاريع المقدمة 31 س م 45 x سم 8 x سم. كما لن يتم إعادة أي من هذه المشاريع.
